Family Economic Strengthening

Many of the families in the Ruiru struggle to make ends meet for their families and few live in adequate housing. For them it is impossible to pay school levies, buy school uniform and pay their contribution to the feeding programme. Kipawa aims to support some of these parents to support their own families through the Family Economic Strengthening.

All the cooks employed in the feeding programme are parents of some of the most needy children in the school, giving them much needed employment, and others are given the seed capital to start their own small business.

We are can see the benefits of this programme in the Ruiru community. Esther is one woman who has been helped to establish a fruit and veg stall near her home and is has been able to support her daughter through secondary school and her young son into primary school.

The initial cost of setting up a parent in a small business is just £35 through the family economic strengthening programme and they are supported throughout the process and beyond by Kipawa-funded social workers.
