Rose’s Story

Rose is a devoted mother doing her best to care for her children, but her family was facing many hardships that left them vulnerable. The situation came to light through Matopeni Primary School, where her son Michael studies. Teachers noticed that the children were often sent home because of unpaid school activity fees and struggled to attend regularly, which was affecting their learning.

At home, conditions were equally difficult. Without proper beddings, the children slept in unhealthy conditions, and food was often scarce, leaving the youngest child malnourished. Terry, Rose’s eldest daughter, had an untreated eye problem that caused constant headaches, making it hard for her to concentrate in class. With no stable source of income, Rose could not meet the family’s basic needs, and the children’s education and wellbeing were at risk.

When Macheo stepped in, the first priority was to provide urgent relief. Through the health program, Terry received glasses that improved her vision and helped her focus on her studies. The family was given new beddings to improve their living conditions, while a cash transfer was provided to ease the immediate hunger the children were experiencing.

To reduce barriers to education, the children also received proper school uniforms. This not only improved their attendance but also helped them feel included and able to participate in school activities. With these changes, Terry’s emotional wellbeing began to recover, and she slowly regained confidence in her learning. Although challenges remain, her school attendance has improved.

Max, another of Rose’s children, is still waiting for additional nutritional support to address his health needs. Meanwhile, the Family Economic Empowerment team has already visited the family to help Rose begin working towards building a more stable income.

Reflecting on the changes, Rose shares that the support has restored her hope. With her children better cared for and a path opening toward economic stability, she feels her family now has the chance to look forward to a brighter and more secure future.
