Kipawa is supporting a number of women to set up and run their own small businesses. Lucy, working with other women in Gitathua, buys charcoal in bulk and sells it on for a small profit. Kipawa provides the seed capital (only around £35 for each woman) and the ongoing social worker support to ensure that these businesses become sustainable and the women can afford to feed and educate their own children. Lucy, Jane, Mariah, Rael and Pauline support each other by combining their buying power to get the best price for the charcoal they buy - though there's also a little healthy competition between them! |
